Updates for 2025-26
Because of invaluable member feedback every year, we are able to continue responding to the needs of parents and teachers today to improve our current offerings and add new resources to encourage and equip everyone we have the pleasure of serving. Here are a few exciting updates on courses for the coming year.
Content for Canadians Revised and Expanded
Our Geography and History lessons streams have been revised and expanded to include specific content for Canadian students across all grades. This includes new Canadian history lessons for high school students, Canadian Geography lessons for Grades 2-3, and more!
Revised Reading Lessons for Grades 1–3
For our youngest learners, we’re enhancing the Grades 1–3 reading lessons to include more phonological awareness and phonics instruction. While Charlotte Mason didn’t use these terms, her methods of teaching reading using alphabet and word-making activities align well with these important skills. Additionally, a large body of research from the past 50 years tells us that focused phonics instruction is important for all children in the early elementary grades. The additional instruction will be blended into the current lessons from the Free and Treadwell Readers. Lessons also incorporate copywork, dictation and etymology.
High School Composition
Starting last year we substantially revised our HS composition curriculum and assignments to include clearer instruction on multiple forms of writing, exploration into deeper analysis, logical fallacies, tone, point of view, and the writing processes, research, revision, and editing (in multiple genres). Our goal is for students to implement the breadth of Mason’s writing goals and cultivate delight in language and fluency with words so that they graduate from HS ready to further explore Academic or Creative writing today. You can look at samples from this year to prepare for HS writing next year and know we’re only continuing to enhance and optimize the program, especially to make it easier for teachers to customize writing prompts to the student for the lessons which integrate with other Alveary subjects.
Electives
- Art History: We’re introducing a High School Art History elective that combines hands-on projects with historical study. Students will create sculptures, frescoes, and abstract paintings, diving deep into the art of different eras.
- Fast Track High School Art: For students starting Alveary in high school, we’re launching a Fast Track Art program to cover all eight levels of art lessons in a focused sequence. Both courses require some materials, so be prepared to stock your art supplies!
- Technology Course: We’re introducing a brand-new year-long technology course for high school students! Twice a week, they’ll engage hands-on with modern tools, from digital media creation to coding. This course focuses on foundational principles, problem-solving, and creating original media. It’s a fantastic opportunity to equip our students with meaningful 21st-century skills that they can use for everything from creative narrations to paid work.
- Health: This new course (in Beta for 2025-26) will provide the ½ credit health requirement for those states that require it or elective credit for any student (two terms of lessons). Approached within a Charlotte Mason framework of focusing on the whole personhood of the student, this course will explore nutrition, mental health, and physical well being.
Other Fun Facts
- History Rotation: Students in Grades 2-12 will study 1650-1800 AD in history this year and students in Grades 5+ will also study the classical era from 550-100BC in Ancient History lessons.
- Picture Study Artists: Get excited with us for our Picture Study this year! Known as one of the first artists to depict the natural world, Francis Barlow (1622–1704) used his artwork to communicate political beliefs and left us with a stunning rendition of Aesop’s Fables. Rachel Ruysch (1664–1750) was a still-life painter from the Dutch Golden Age. She balanced a thriving career with raising ten children and producing breathtaking art that was highly sought after during her lifetime. John Singleton Copley (1738–1815) is known as the first American artist. While he did paint portraits of America’s Founding Fathers, he remained loyal to the British Crown until his death. His work captures a fascinating slice of Revolutionary War history.
- Book Videos: Several members of the curriculum team share an overview of the books for 2025-26!
- Interested in using Alveary in your co-op, hybrid school, or school? We have options for you!
